$48,000,000 Mesothelioma Verdict in California

Union Carbide – $48 million; CA Bobbie Izell, a Los Angelean who worked in construction in the 1960’s and 70’s, developed mesothelioma in the course of his 30-year career as a cement contractor, suffering constant exposure to asbestos from 1947-1980 Union Carbide manufactures Calidria-type asbestos for use in their products, and an internal memo was revealed during the court proceedings indicating that Union Carbide knew the latency period for asbestos exposure, that Calidria caused more severe lung damage in lab rats than any other type of asbestos and that their materials were making workers ill

The jury returned a verdict of $48 million, with Union Carbide responsible for 90% and Riverside Cement and California Portland Cement Company bearing the rest of the burden
