Sharing Your Chase Ultimate Rewards Points with Another Person | Understanding the Rules & Process

Hi there, it's Ernest from Trip Astute In this video, we're exploring how to share Chase Ultimate Rewards points with others, and avoid getting in trouble with the issuer

(light chiming music) Those of you that have been watching this channel know that I'm a huge fan of Chase's Ultimate Rewards program While every points program has its merits, Chase's Ultimate Rewards is the one that seems to provide the most value for me, mostly because I can pull points from different cards and take advantage of bonus categories that match my everyday spend One question that seems to come up a lot is whether you can share your Ultimate Rewards points with others The short answer is "yes", but it's complicated So today, we're going to go over how to do it and what you should and shouldn't do in order to stay within the rules

Some of you might be asking, "why would you want to transfer points to someone else?" Well, one, if you happen to be closing an account and don't have another Chase Ultimate Rewards earning card, you might want to send it to another person just to be safe Another reason for transferring points will be that you don't have a premium Chase card that allows you to transfer your Ultimate Rewards points to a travel partner or redeem at a higher rate on the Chase portal But perhaps someone in your household does have a premium card, like a Chase Sapphire Preferred, Reserve or Ink Preferred card So officially, Chase states the following: You can move your points but only to another Chase card with Ultimate Rewards belonging to you or one member of your household or owner of the company, as applicable The important thing to keep in mind is that you can only move points to others in your household

So essentially, only people who have the same address listed on their account To do this, all you have to do is log into your Chase Ultimate Rewards account Next you'll want to select your card, then select "Combine points" under your points total From here, you'll want to select "Add household member" You'll then be asked to enter the household member's account number and last name

You'll then be asked to certify that the card belongs to a member of your household or an owner of the company, if you're transferring from a business credit card That's the process in a nutshell However, here are some tips to keep in mind Number one: Verify your account addresses If you're going to transfer points to someone in your household, make sure to double check that they have the same address

The last thing you want to do is to initiate a transfer and get flagged for breaking the rules, or possibly having your account shut down This is particularly important if you happen to have recently moved or changed your address Just take a moment to check the address on your statement or in your account Number two: Don't overdo it or abuse the process A lot of folks online have reported that their accounts have been shut down or locked by transferring massive amounts of points frequently

While it's not guaranteed that your account will get shut down, it's worth not raising any red flags in the process This would include opening an account just to earn the bonus, then transferring all the points and closing the account You definitely don't want to do that Number three: Avoid transferring points to your household member's hotel or airline account In the situation where your household member has certain status with a hotel or airline, but doesn't have a premium card that allows for transfers, it might be tempting just to transfer the points directly to their hotel or airline account

However, there are different rules that govern this process, so I don't recommend it The rules basically state but the person has to be an authorized user on your account So while it's possible, I would suggest reading the fine print so you don't accidentally flag your account Do you share Ultimate Rewards points with others in your household?
